A history of research excellence
The Georgia Tech Research Institute was called the State Engineering Experiment Station until 1984. In 1919, the Georgia Legislature formed EES to help develop Georgia’s resources, industries and commerce. The Station was to also assist with national programs of science, technology and preparedness.
EES officially began research in 1934 with just three researchers, a $12,000 budget and an entrepreneurial spirit focused on service. Nearly seventy-five years later, GTRI has nearly 1,200 employees performing more than $131 million in research and development yearly. Our engineering and science expertise solves some of the toughest technical problems facing government and industry across the globe and helps shape a brighter future for everyone.
