2nd Annual GTRI Distinguished Performance Awards and Honors

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) presented its 2nd Annual Distinguished Performance Awards and Honors on April 30, 2010 at the GTRI Conference Center. This program is designed to recognize and reward outstanding performance, outstanding achievements and exceptional leadership by GTRI research and support staff. Each category was created to represent the organization's core values of integrity, innovation and excellence, as well as to support strategic goals in the areas of technical preeminence, people, environment and finances.

Presenters included GTRI Deputy Directors Lisa Sills and Tom McDermott, with the highest honors given by then Georgia Tech Vice President and GTRI Director Steve Cross. Cross became the Executive Vice President of Research for Georgia Tech on May 1, 2010. Each recipient received an etched-glass award along with an honorarium. A photo of each winner has been placed in his or her work area in recognition of the achievement. In addition, photos of all winners will be placed at GTRI's headquarters.

The awards were divided into two categories: lab awards were presented to researchers and support staff who work within labs; and support operations awards were presented to employees who work in administrative support units and the executive offices.

The award winners are:

Steve Barton (ELSYS) – Innovative Research Award: This award was presented to the research faculty member who demonstrated outstanding initiative, creative thinking and innovation to solve complex problems.

Scott Harlan (ISD) – Innovative Solution Award: The recipient of this award devised a solution or suggested a process improvement that resulted in significant time and/or cost savings for GTRI.

Judy Parks (ATAS) – Outstanding Performance in Research Support: This award focused on the staff member whose performance was most outstanding in support of GTRI research activities.

Carol Croy (BSD) – Outstanding Program Support Award: This award is presented to a staff member whose performance was most outstanding in support of GTRI research activities.

Robert Beasley (ELSYS) – Outstanding Performance in Program Development: This award is presented to the research faculty member who made the most outstanding contributions to research program development during the prior year.

Doug Martin (ATAS) – Program Management Excellence Award: This award recognizes outstanding performance at all levels, including task, project and unit.

Dennis Crain (FO) – Distinguished Customer Service Award: This award is presented to the staff member who enhances the customer experience by providing personalized and attentive service to teammates, supervisors, lab personnel and/or visitors.

Jack Flicker (EOSL) – Graduate Student Research Award: This award is presented to the graduate student employee who provided outstanding performance and superior technical achievements in support of GTRI research activities.

Josh Hammond (ELSYS) – Undergraduate Student Research Award: This award is presented to the undergraduate student employee who has provided outstanding performance in support of GTRI research activities.

Paris Robinson (ESD) - Outstanding Student Award: Awarded to the student employee or co-op student who has provided outstanding performance in a support unit. The persons nominated for this award must have been enrolled as full-time students at an accredited college or university for at least half of the previous calendar year.

Lisa Ehrman (SEAL) - Distinguished Mentor Award in Labs: This award recognizes a member of the GTRI general faculty who has sustained outstanding achievement in mentoring junior faculty members in research activities.

Nan Meeks (ESD) – Distinguished Mentor Award in Support Operations: This award recognizes a member of the support staff who has sustained outstanding achievement in mentoring or coaching others engaged in providing support activities.

Anthony Contrada (ITTL) – Distinguished Outreach Award: Presented to a member of the general faculty who represents GTRI in exemplary public and/or human relations work.

Martha Farley (COMM) - Distinguished Recognition Award: This highest award given to a staff member recognizes the individual who best exemplifies GTRI’s mission and values as determined by the director.

Ellis Kirby (SSD) - Sustained Excellence in Service Award: This award, determined by the Director, is for sustained and stellar performance in support of GTRI and the institute at large in achieving significant and visible results for the entire organization. The individual selected reflects GTRI’s core values and leads by example.

Robert Baxley (ITTL) - Junior Research Excellence Award: Awarded to a junior member of the research staff who performed outstanding, creative research, resulting in innovative or novel solutions to real world problems and recognized by his/her management and sponsors. This award will be targeted toward junior members of the research staff of rank no higher than Researcher II and who has served at least one, but no more than five years at GTRI.

Tommer Ender (ELSYS) - Junior Research Excellence Award: Awarded to a junior member of the research staff who performed outstanding, creative research, resulting in innovative or novel solutions to real world problems and recognized by his/her management and sponsors. This award will be targeted toward junior members of the research staff of rank no higher than Researcher II and who has served at least one, but no more than five years at GTRI.

Larry Corey (SEAL) – Outstanding Performance in Research and Development: This award recognizes a research engineer, research scientist, research technician or research associate with more than 5 years service at GTRI, a senior or principal research faculty member who has sustained outstanding achievement in research.
