Machine Services Department

Our researchers imagine and create elegant and useful engineering and scientific solutions. Those solutions become reality with the help of the GTRI’s Machine Services Department. With more than 135 years of experience in diverse areas of machining, if you can dream it, we can build it.

Machine Services Drafting Standards

Machine Services designs, fabricates, assembles, repairs and modifies individual parts or entire mechanical devices used for research projects or other needs. More than 90 tools and four types of PC programming/design software are at our disposal to complete each job. And when we see a way to save time or money without compromising quality, we say so.

We're committed to quality and devoted to quick turnaround times. In addition to working on GTRI research projects, we also assist researchers, graduate students, facilities and shop staffs in the Georgia Institute of Technology's schools and colleges and at other universities around metro Atlanta.

We work on pieces ranging from massive, multi-part pieces of equipment to tiny parts requiring us to work using magnification. Among the devices we've contributed to are:

  • A special antenna for the airlock on the International Space Station
  • Parts for the first 10 Olympic torches created in conjunction with the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta
  • Parts for a U.S. Air Force test facility believed to be the only one of its kind in the world that conducts wide bandwidth, bistatic imaging and radar cross-section measurements of full-sized aircraft.

Small jobs, such as modification of flanges, can often be completed within a day. Larger jobs, such as design and fabrication of airfoils or other multi-part structures, may require two days to several weeks, depending on the complexity of the assignment.
