As a research engineer II at the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s (GTRI) Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS), William Benjamin excels in the field of electrical engineering and is passionate about supporting those who are “overlooked” in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

When students’ college careers come to a close, some choose to stay with GTRI while others embark on a new life chapter equipped with knowledge and experience they gained from their time at GTRI. Two graduating students, Walter (Drew) Disharoon and Laura Heller, share their experiences and wisdom.

Students at Tucker Middle School designed a device to help victims of human trafficking the nation’s busiest airport — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International. Motivated by statistics of human trafficking, a group of students from Tucker Middle School consulted experts in the government and at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) — the nonprofit applied research division of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).

Dr. Jon Duke is the director of the Center for Health Analytics and Informatics at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and a principal research scientist at the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing. His career before Tech was entirely in medical environments, both as a physician and a researcher.  

Nearly 20 GTRI researchers competed in the U.S. Navy’s HACKtheMACHINE event held March 23 to 26 this year. The event was mostly virtual, but a handful of GTRI researchers collaborated in person while following social distancing guidelines.

GTRI’s Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems (ATAS) Laboratory develops advanced technologies and systems from concept development to prototypes, including robots. The lab recently designed ARTI, a four-wheeled robot designed to perform autonomous inventory management tasks at the Marines Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia.

Danika Tynes, Ph.D., is a senior research associate at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), whose work primarily focuses on advancing and strengthening global and local health systems. For over 15 years, Tynes has researched telehealth; thus, she has become a critical expert in navigating the increased popularity and necessity of telehealth.

Through the GTRI STING program, junior researchers have an opportunity to approach research differently, as they gain real-world experience in customer discovery and compete against each others’ pitches.
